In the shelter’s words
Roz is a 7-year-young English Setter and, in her North Texas foster home, she is blooming into the beloved companion she was always meant to be. She found her way to SWESR when her previous owner in Oklahoma could no longer care for her, her brother Boe, and her mother Cassie, who were all rescued together. Roz has beautifully proven the "3 days, 3 weeks" rescue dog acclimation rule entirely true, adapting wonderfully from her past life as an outdoor kennel dog to the comforts of home living. Roz is a soft, sensitive, independent and sweet soul. She can be a bit timid and shy at first, but she is treat-motivated and eager to please. She already responds well to routines, coming when called by her name and a clap of the hands. Roz is a quiet and polite houseguest; she does not bark at the doorbell, visitors, or outside noises, and she is completely non-destructive. While she is permitted on the furniture and nothing is off-limits, she has not yet ventured onto the couch on her own. She is very affectionate and looking for pets and love, but prefers receiving affection when she invites it. Thanks to her structured routine, Roz is now house-trained and has had no accidents in her foster home! She is great in her crate, staying there contentedly for 2 to 4 hours during the day when her humans are away and sleeping soundly crated through the night. Typical of many field ES, Roz has a bit of anxiety about loud noises and thunderstorms so she is looking for a quieter, non-hunting home. Like many female ES, she can be a bit bossy with her brother Boe when she has a highly valued toy or food so her foster parents feed Roz and Boe separately. Roz does not resource guard towards humans, and once the initial meal is done, she doesn't mind sharing and will happily swap bowls with Boe to finish up every last bite. During her veterinary exam, it was noted that Roz has a heart murmur; it is genetic and inherited from her mother Cassie who has the same condition. There is no concern regarding her daily high-energy activity levels, her forever family will want to monitor it regularly with your DVM. When it's time to head outside, Roz turns on her true English Setter engine. She loves to self-exercise as much as 4-6 hours a day, staying very active, curious, and playful while patrolling the yard or resting on the porch with her foster parents nearby. Roz has a medium prey drive, typical for a field English Setter; she loves to track crickets in the mulch and "hunt" frogs near the pool, though she prefers to just watch the birds rather than give chase. She has a blast engaging in energetic, friendly games of "tag" through the open fence line with the neighbor's Vizsla, Golden Doodle, and German Shepherd. While she isn't fond of swimming, she did accidentally fall into the pool early on and was successfully taught how to find the stairs, and she can safely navigate her way out on her own. Roz rides well in the car and is a calm passenger with no history of car sickness. Roz is friendly and social with people. She has been introduced to 16, 8, and 2 year old grandkids and she was fine; during a party in her foster home, when things got more busy and loud for her liking, Roz put herself in her crate which is left open during the day. When meeting other dogs, she is social and friendly. Cats are unknown, but her mother Cassie has proven to be cat-safe and they lived on the same property together her whole life. Roz would make a good first English Setter for a family new to the breed. While we think she would be content as an only dog (provided she gets plenty of human attention) or with a dog that would appreciate her somewhat bossy girl personality, she is already a wonderful dog match with her brother Boe who is in the same foster home. They can be adopted separately, but our preference is to adopt them together; they love each other and it would be great for them to transition to their forever home together. They will make a wonderful bonded pair for a lucky adopter looking for an instant family and twice the love. Roz is looking for a home with a fenced yard where she can run free—where she has room to zoom outside. Roz is in a foster home with a one acre fenced, setter-interesting yard so she gets plenty of daily exercise and doesn’t currently need daily walks. In her forever home it will be important that she has the opportunity for plenty of daily exercise, whether it is a large and interesting fenced yard or a medium sized yard and daily walks. Roz is fully vetted, microchipped, current on vaccinations and tests. She still needs to gain some weight. She is a truly special soul who is ready to bring a lifetime of affection to her forever home.

Our adoption fee is $300 for a dog under 1 year old, $250.00 for a dog 1 year and older. Some dogs will be available for a lower fee. Adopters must be 21 years old or older. Any pets currently in the adoptive home must be spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Heartworm preventative is now recommended by Veterinarians in almost all areas of the US, and most are recommending year-round use. If your Vet recommends heartworm testing and consistent use of heartworm preventative medication we will verify to ensure your Vet records show heartworm testing completed and preventative purchased. For dogs currently in an applicantâs home, you should have a history of providing this care for at least the past year. If there are no dogs currently in the home we will check prior vet references and verify heartworm testing and use of preventative for dogs previously in the home. The purchase of heartworm preventative requires a prescription and prior purchases, if applicable, will be verified during the vet reference portion of our application process. If the applicant's vet clinic recommends heartworm preventative but it is purchased elsewhere, we ask applicants to provide proof of the prior purchases. After we receive a completed application to adopt, we conduct a phone interview and a home visit before approving an applicant. A vet reference must be provided for all current and recent pets. Personal and vet references will be verified. If renting, please provide your landlord's contact information or a verification letter from your landlord regarding acceptance of pets.
