In the shelter’s words

Thelma and Louise are a cat and a dog that came to TJO together and have been inseparable! Found huddled together on a porch, they have found comfort and security in each other during this new chapter, and would love to extend their friendship to include a new family.OTHER PETS: Louise came in with a cat and has some experience with other pets in the home. However, she tends to avoid other dogs, so as with any new family member she'll need a slow introduction to a new home. A mellow, well-socialized dog will the best fit for both Louise and Thelma as they adjust. While Thelma tends to be more open to meeting new people, Louise is what we call a chicken little--a dog that is easily scared by new sounds, people, and objects in her environment. It's important to be able to read body language and recognize fear to help her feel more comfortable in a new home, while giving time and plenty of space. They'll both need time to properly settle into a new home and fully decompress, so limiting guests and keeping outings short and close to home will help them adjust. She also has shown some subtle signs of possible resource guarding of food, so trading up and leaving food alone is safest and will help reassure her she can keep her favorite things. Minors should be actively supervised at all times to keep everyone comfortable and safe. She hasn't shown a high level of energy while at the shelter, but she will still need regular exercise combined with mental enrichment such as food puzzles, games, sniffing, and learning fun tricks to meet her needs and prevent boredom. She also enjoys sitting on laps with those she feels comfortable with, but it's important to allow her to approach and make that choice. Thelma has been very social with the people around her, but so far has preferred spending her time on a comfy chair than running across a room. After that, regular visits to the vet will help keep her in her best health. Thelma has been given a clean bill of health during her stay at TJO. GROOMING: Regular brushing will help to reduce shedding in the house.

The first step is to fill out an adoption application, answering some basic questions about yourself and your household. This will help the adoption counselors facilitate the matchmaking process. Most adoptions take at least 45 minutes to one hour to complete. The Adoption Center is a busy place, so please be patient and allow yourself enough time for our process. THANK YOU! What we will need to know when you adopt a new companion: If you own your home, please bring some item of verification (tax bill, water bill, or mortgage statement.) Please also be sure to check your homeowner’s insurance policy. Some policies restrict coverage for certain dog breeds. If you DO NOT own your place of residence, please be sure the property owner will consent to have a pet on his/her property. We will verify with landlords over the phone before sending a new companion home, so please have the appropriate name and phone number available. Other pets already living with you will need to be up-to-date on vaccination. This is to decrease the risk of spreading infectious disease from one animal to another. It is important to understand that your new companion will be a member of your family. This can mean a 10-15 year commitment from you! Please bring along family members so we can make sure it will be a good match before you make a commitment. Also, if adopting a second dog, please bring your current dog with you---we can let them spend some time together and give you some suggestions on surviving the adjustment period. Please be sure you have considered the financial obligation involved in caring for a companion animal. This includes routine veterinary and emergency care, in addition to food, supplies and training. The adoption counselors can give you an idea of basic costs involved for each type of animal. Many animals adopted from shelters can require an immediate visit to the veterinarian. Because of the volume of un-vaccinated animals entering a shelter’s care, the risk of
