In the shelter’s words

Hatch Date: Approx. 1991 We would like to introduce you to Bumber. Bumber is an estimated 35-year-old, DNA-tested male Orange-winged Amazon. His story is heartbreaking, but his future has the potential to be beautiful Bumber came to us after spending approximately 25 years locked inside an inadequate cage. Bumber has been simply existing with no true quality of life. He has endured severe neglect and has never been allowed to experience the love, freedom, and trust that every companion bird deserves. Today, Bumber is learning something completely new to him: how to trust❤️ Bumber’s foster is taking things slowly, allowing him to set the pace, and so far, he is making amazing progress. Those soulful eyes are always watching, observing, learning, and quietly taking in everything he is being taught. Bumber has recently begun allowing gentle head scratches! This seemingly small milestone is actually enormous for a soul who has spent so much of his life void of physical affection and contact. However, Bumber is still very fearful. He is not yet brave enough to leave his new and spacious housing. The door is open, and the opportunity to stretch his wings is right there waiting for him. When that day comes, when he finally chooses to step through that door and experience the world beyond his cage, it will be an extraordinary moment! Those 25 years of captivity will finally give way to freedom. For now, Bumber Is a fear biter. And this is completely understandable and to be expected, given his experiences. Bumber’s reactions are not about being a “bad bird”; they are a result of a lifetime of learning that being shuffled between people and exposed to unfamiliar and frightening experiences are things to fear. That people are something to fear. Touch and care are foreign to Bumber. That being said, Bumber does not and cannot have someone who will attempt to rush him. This boy really needs someone who understands that trust cannot be demanded. Trust is an exceptionally slow and steady process - especially with the abused and neglected. Bumber needs time, commitment, patience, along with a high degree of understanding. With all of the four mentioned above, he can and will blossom into the bird he was always meant to be. His forever family must be willing to let him heal at his own pace, respect his boundaries, celebrate the smallest victories, and give him the time he needs to discover that life can finally be safe and happy. Bumber has waited so incredibly long to live and to be treated with dignity. To date, Bumber has begun to discover the world of toys and enrichment. He is beginning to forage and discover new fruits and vegetables that he has never been offered. He is finding his voice and being vocal, and he is slowly learning that life does have something to offer him. Bumber has been seen by an Avian Vet, has had a full blood workup, as well as completed disease testing. Bumber is being fostered in Howell, NJ He will require in-person visits before adoption We do not ship our birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. The first step in the adoption process is the completion and submission of the Adoption Application. The application should be emailed to fortheloveofbirdsnj@gmail.com. Be sure to include two personal references and a veterinary reference. We check the references and then will reach out to you to schedule a mutually convenient time to talk on the phone. After your application is approved and based on your preferences, lifestyle and bird experience we will recommend a bird(s) for you to meet. Or you can let us know if you are interested in adopting one of our available birds. For small birds like finches and budgies, they typically can be adopted after one visit to their foster home. Medium to large parrots require at least three visits with the bird at their foster home. The reason for this is three fold. This provides the potential adopter with time to consider whether the bird is a good match with their family and life style and gives you time to get your house ready for the bird to move in. Second it gives the bird several opportunities to meet with you and get used to you. Many birds are hesitant with new people during their first visit meeting with them. And finally, it allows the foster home to watch how you interact with the bird and they can pass along information on the bird and educate the potential adopter on bird husbandry as needed. All of our adoptable birds are cared for in private foster homes throughout New Jersey. Each of our birds are treated as the unique individual that they are. Please note that we require a waiting period of at least 6 months between bringing new birds into your home. Each bird requires a transition period to be comfortable with their new family and in their new home. Please don't short change your bird by bringing another flock member in too soon. There is an adoption fee; fees are listed on our website. Our birds are sent home with their cage, toys and some food to get you started. Additionally, all of our birds are di
