In the shelter’s words
Western Toro is an off the track Standardbred gelding who raced for 9 seasons before retiring to a pleasure driving home. When that owner had some life changes, Toro joined Safe Harbor. Toro is a gentle giant who has taken right to riding. That said, he is big and green under saddle, and so is best suited to a more experienced rider or one working with a trainer. Toro could also thrive in a pleasure driving home, however he does "look" at things when driving outdoors and would likewise need a more experienced, confident driver. He's a professional - wants to be handled competently and correctly and is likely to test his boundaries if he thinks you aren't paying attention. He's kind and gentle with kids but due to his size would need an adult supervisor. Due to an old, cold calcification on his left front (visible in the photos), Toro is NOT suitable for jumping, hunting, barrel racing, etc etc high impact careers. Not 2 feet, not 18 inches, NO JUMPING. He is 17 and sound and we will only adopt to homes intending the best for him. Toro would fit in best in an all-gelding herd. He's UTD on vet, farrier, and deworming, and he's got great barefoot feet. PPEs are welcome for approved, interested adopters. Visit safeharborstandardbreds.org to read more about adoption and complete an application. ** Please note: ONLY approved adopters may visit/ride adoptable horses; this is out of courtesy to our fosters and volunteers. Horses who are posted are available unless otherwise noted. Safe Harbor Standardbreds adopts under a lifetime safety net contract.**
