In the shelter’s words
Hatch Date: 1994 Harry is a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. This is an endangered species, and as such, he can only be adopted by someone living in the same state as him, which is Pennsylvania. He is approximately 32 years old. As a baby, he was with his original guardian for 5 years and then in his current home for approximately the last 30 years. He was well-loved and is used to attention from his family. Harry’s guardian recently passed away and the family is looking for a loving home for him. Harry is adventurous and has a lot of energy, which he exhibits by running around the inside and outside of his cage. He loves to climb! At times he will hang upside down and swing back and forth or dance up and down. He loves to vocalize and will scream when he wants attention or gets startled. He can be extremely loud, but isn’t a habitual screamer. Typical cockatoo. Harry has a pretty decent vocabulary that he loves to share while he raises his crest. Some of the things he says are “Hello”, “Scratch the pretty bird”, and “I love you Harry”. He also can whistle and gives kisses. He loves attention which he often gets by talking and showing his crest. Harry also enjoys being pet. Although Harry is unable to fly because he has a hole in one of his wings from when he was a baby, he loves to show off his wings. Harry loves being out of the cage but is a typical cockatoo and must be supervised because he loves to chew. He loves to shred wood and toys. Harry did not have the healthiest diet for most of his life, but has recently been transitioned to Pretty Bird pellets. He enjoys colorful pellets mixed into his chop. Harry is still a picky eater, but has done well transitioning to a healthier diet. Harry does enjoy holding food in his hand and eating it. Harry has not been exposed to other birds in at least the last 20-25 years, and he does not have experience with other pets. As is true with many birds, he can be protective of his cage and can be aggressive and lunge to bite while in the cage. He does give warning signs (his crest raises and he opens his beak), so you have to pay attention. He will only be adopted to a home with large bird experience and understanding of cockatoos and their typical behaviors. He would thrive in an environment that can give him the love and attention he seeks and deserves. He is a sweet bird and likes to be pet. Harry has been disease tested for PBFD and Chlamydia. Harry is participating in our Help with Rehoming program and is still living in his home in Yarley, PA. He will only be adopted to a forever home in Pennsylvania. Three visits are required to adopt Harry. For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. We do not have a central location. We only allow approved applicants to make visits. If interested in adopting Harry, you must be willing to make the required number of visits. Please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org. Please read our adoption policies & procedures and complete an adoption application.

The first step in the adoption process is the completion and submission of the Adoption Application. The application should be emailed to fortheloveofbirdsnj@gmail.com. Be sure to include two personal references and a veterinary reference. We check the references and then will reach out to you to schedule a mutually convenient time to talk on the phone. After your application is approved and based on your preferences, lifestyle and bird experience we will recommend a bird(s) for you to meet. Or you can let us know if you are interested in adopting one of our available birds. For small birds like finches and budgies, they typically can be adopted after one visit to their foster home. Medium to large parrots require at least three visits with the bird at their foster home. The reason for this is three fold. This provides the potential adopter with time to consider whether the bird is a good match with their family and life style and gives you time to get your house ready for the bird to move in. Second it gives the bird several opportunities to meet with you and get used to you. Many birds are hesitant with new people during their first visit meeting with them. And finally, it allows the foster home to watch how you interact with the bird and they can pass along information on the bird and educate the potential adopter on bird husbandry as needed. All of our adoptable birds are cared for in private foster homes throughout New Jersey. Each of our birds are treated as the unique individual that they are. Please note that we require a waiting period of at least 6 months between bringing new birds into your home. Each bird requires a transition period to be comfortable with their new family and in their new home. Please don't short change your bird by bringing another flock member in too soon. There is an adoption fee; fees are listed on our website. Our birds are sent home with their cage, toys and some food to get you started. Additionally, all of our birds are di
