In the shelter’s words

Meet Kenai, the male Husky. Kenai came to the Shelter as a stray found in Seacliff. He was found with four mini-me’s in tow (which we assume are his puppies)! A good Samaritan brought them to the Shelter for safety. Although we don't know a lot about Kenai's life before the Shelter, we have learned a ton about him since he arrived. A volunteer who has taken him on overnights reports: 'I’ve taken Kenai on a couple of sleepovers and have been extremely impressed with how well he behaves in a home! At first, he took his time exploring the house and sniffing everything, but he settled in surprisingly quickly and relaxed near me. He was a wonderful houseguest, spending much of his time snoozing by my side, happily chewing on toys, or sleeping quietly on his dog bed. Kenai also enjoys walks and car rides! He’s a great passenger, settling nicely into the back seat and riding calmly. He did great around kids, too. I took him to my son’s soccer practice, where he happily let the kids pet him. He calmly lay nearby, watching them practice without trying to run onto the field or interrupt the game. When my son had a friend over and the boys played ball indoors, Kenai was curious about what they were doing but was perfectly content to play with his own toy instead. Although Kenai can be wonderfully patient and calm, he also has a goofy, playful side! He loves a good game of tug-of-war and happily chomps away on squeaky toys. He’s also very affectionate, enjoys being petted, and will gladly ask for more attention. Belly rubs are another favorite! I wasn’t sure whether Kenai was fully house-trained, so I made sure to give him frequent potty breaks. He did wonderfully—no accidents in the house, and he slept through the entire night without needing a potty break. Overall, Kenai was an absolute pleasure to have over. He’s a lovely mix of self-confident, calm, well-mannered, affectionate, and playful. I’m sure he’ll bring a smile to your face every day!'Kenai's adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter Foundation's Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
