In the shelter’s words

Meet Koa! A spirited seven-and-a-half-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound mix currently in Temecula, CA, whose presence is a lively blend of soulful howls and boundless energy wrapped in a sleek black coat with warm brown accents. Koa is an affectionate, high-energy companion who thrives on human connection and loves being part of the action, whether he is heading out for a long run, enjoying enrichment time with his favorite bones, or hopping into the car for an adventure! He already knows commands like sit, lay, and stay, and he responds well to structure and continued learning through positive reinforcement. Koa forms strong bonds with his people and greets others with enthusiasm, bringing a joyful spark into daily life! He is house-trained, crate trained, and comfortable being left alone for short periods, making him a steady presence in a home that can match his active lifestyle. His expressive howl and constant-companion nature make him a memorable and engaging friend who loves to stay close to his favorite humans. Koa would do well in a calm, structured environment with an experienced guardian who understands canine communication and behavior support. He needs clear boundaries, consistent routines, and plenty of daily exercise to help him feel balanced and fulfilled. Koa is not compatible with multi-dog living and would need to be the only pet in the home so he can focus fully on his relationship with his family. Koa also has a history of challenging interactions that require thoughtful management. He has been involved in multiple conflicts with other dogs and has shown reactivity toward them. In addition, there was a recent incident where he bit a family member after being approached while resting, despite giving warning signals. This highlights how important it is for his guardian to recognize and respect his need for space, especially during rest times, and to provide a low-stimulation environment with careful introductions to new people. With the right guidance, Koa’s loyalty, energy, and affectionate personality truly shine. Could Koa be your next adventure partner who keeps life active, engaging, and full of connection?
