In the shelter’s words

Hatch Date: 2023 Pockets is a 4-year-old White-Winged Parakeet. She is quite the little firecracker for sure! She has TONS of energy and is very vocal and active both inside her cage and out. She loves playing with her bells and paper toys in her cage, loves taking baths in her water bowl, enjoys her sunflower seed treats very much and is always very curious to see what you're doing. Her foster mom was typing this write-up with Pockets on her shoulder, and she kept coming down to the keyboard to "help" ...it was quite funny! Until she gets to know and trust you, she is very nippy, but once she warms up to you (about a week or two) she is very trusting, playful and lovable and will step up just fine. You learn how to read her moods and let her run the show and you will both get along just fine. She really enjoys her shoulder rides, cuddles, getting attention and being part of what's happening. She loves blueberries and strawberries. She's always interested in what we're eating or drinking too... she is very curious! She enjoys licking the condensation off of my water bottles...it's pretty funny. Right now, she seems to prefer females over males, as her previous caretaker was a female. She has been DNA tested female, so will only be adopted out to either a single household or one with another female white-winged parakeet. She will do well in either circumstance, but being alone, she does call out a lot and loves looking out the window at the other birds, so we feel she will thrive in an environment with another DNA tested female bird. About a week after arriving at her foster home, she quieted down somewhat and started playing with and staying occupied with her toys. She whistles the chorus to "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire...SO cute! She also mumbles to herself and her toys when she's alone and we're in the other room. She is a GREAT alarm when someone is coming up to the front door and always lets us know the mailman or Amazon person is delivering. She is quite the love once she gets used to you...even if you're just sitting in the room where she is. She will fly right to your head and crawl down on your shoulder to be with you. She doesn't seem to like the vacuum too much, as she "roars" while it is being used...it's really funny! Pockets has been disease tested for Chlamydia and PBFD. She is being fostered in Hillsborough, NJ and will require multiple visits to find the right family fit. She will only be adopted into a forever home within driving distance. We will NOT ship our birds. For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. We do not have a central location. Bailey is living in a volunteer's private home. We only allow approved applicants to make visits. If interested in adopting Pockets, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org Please read our adoption policies & procedures, and complete an adoption application.

The first step in the adoption process is the completion and submission of the Adoption Application. The application should be emailed to fortheloveofbirdsnj@gmail.com. Be sure to include two personal references and a veterinary reference. We check the references and then will reach out to you to schedule a mutually convenient time to talk on the phone. After your application is approved and based on your preferences, lifestyle and bird experience we will recommend a bird(s) for you to meet. Or you can let us know if you are interested in adopting one of our available birds. For small birds like finches and budgies, they typically can be adopted after one visit to their foster home. Medium to large parrots require at least three visits with the bird at their foster home. The reason for this is three fold. This provides the potential adopter with time to consider whether the bird is a good match with their family and life style and gives you time to get your house ready for the bird to move in. Second it gives the bird several opportunities to meet with you and get used to you. Many birds are hesitant with new people during their first visit meeting with them. And finally, it allows the foster home to watch how you interact with the bird and they can pass along information on the bird and educate the potential adopter on bird husbandry as needed. All of our adoptable birds are cared for in private foster homes throughout New Jersey. Each of our birds are treated as the unique individual that they are. Please note that we require a waiting period of at least 6 months between bringing new birds into your home. Each bird requires a transition period to be comfortable with their new family and in their new home. Please don't short change your bird by bringing another flock member in too soon. There is an adoption fee; fees are listed on our website. Our birds are sent home with their cage, toys and some food to get you started. Additionally, all of our birds are di
