In the shelter’s words

Hatch Date: 2019 Piper is a beautiful Green and Teal , 7-year-old male B u dgie. He was surrendered to our rescue by a woman who was no longer able to care for him. He spent all of his time in his cage with his female partner, Picasso. However, she has recently showed aggression towards him after years of sharing a cage with him, and they unfortunately had to be separated. Piper is skittish since his previous owner did not work with him at all, and he remained in his cage full time. Piper’s foster mom is working on getting him more comfortable around hands and people in general. He is very food motivated! With the proper patience, Piper will accept millet from a person’s hand. He is comfortable and happy when people are in the same room, but gets nervous when people start to get too close, or put their hands in his cage. Piper is quiet for a bird and occasionally likes to chatter to the other foster birds who he shares a room with. He LOVES wood toys and enjoys shredding them! He is also a capable flyer when he needs to, although he does not often. Piper loves a good spray bottle bath, and will happily ruffle his feathers and preen if you give him a spritz! Piper is currently on a seed and pellet diet, and is largely unwilling to try new foods. Piper is a sweet boy with a lovely personality that shines through with patience and care. Piper has been disease tested for Chlamydia and PBFD. Piper is being fostered in Newtown, PA. We do not ship our adoptable birds. You must live within driving distance to meet and adopt birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, we only allow approved adopters to make the required visits. If interested in adopting Piper, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org read our adoption policies, see our fees, and complete an adoption application.

The first step in the adoption process is the completion and submission of the Adoption Application. The application should be emailed to fortheloveofbirdsnj@gmail.com. Be sure to include two personal references and a veterinary reference. We check the references and then will reach out to you to schedule a mutually convenient time to talk on the phone. After your application is approved and based on your preferences, lifestyle and bird experience we will recommend a bird(s) for you to meet. Or you can let us know if you are interested in adopting one of our available birds. For small birds like finches and budgies, they typically can be adopted after one visit to their foster home. Medium to large parrots require at least three visits with the bird at their foster home. The reason for this is three fold. This provides the potential adopter with time to consider whether the bird is a good match with their family and life style and gives you time to get your house ready for the bird to move in. Second it gives the bird several opportunities to meet with you and get used to you. Many birds are hesitant with new people during their first visit meeting with them. And finally, it allows the foster home to watch how you interact with the bird and they can pass along information on the bird and educate the potential adopter on bird husbandry as needed. All of our adoptable birds are cared for in private foster homes throughout New Jersey. Each of our birds are treated as the unique individual that they are. Please note that we require a waiting period of at least 6 months between bringing new birds into your home. Each bird requires a transition period to be comfortable with their new family and in their new home. Please don't short change your bird by bringing another flock member in too soon. There is an adoption fee; fees are listed on our website. Our birds are sent home with their cage, toys and some food to get you started. Additionally, all of our birds are di
